Redefining Luxury: Why Experiences Matter More Than Possessions
by Caroline Lucas - 4 September 2025

Luxury as we've always known it
Madikwe is known (worldwide) as a prestigious, luxurious, high end, super expensive, big five, malaria free safari destination, with some of – if not the – best game viewing in South Africa, catering mainly for the rich, international market.
This we know from anecdotal evidence where guests have used these actual words and expressed surprise and delight that Mosetlha exists – right in the middle of all this wonder – disrupting and shifting perceptions about our magnificent reserve and emphasising that this luxury is well within reach.

Moving Beyond Labels
We’ve always said: "There are 21 commercial lodges in Madikwe, 20 are high end, 5 star, luxury lodges ... and then there’s us."
I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently, and this self-deprecating, downplaying of our (honestly amazing) offering is not doing us any favours.
So, we’re rethinking our understanding of luxury. We’re rethinking what we put out there about our Mosetlha Eco Experience... Adjectives like stripped back, rustic, back to basics, honest, real, authentic are all perfectly true – but they don’t tell our whole story.
So we're going to look at the conventional notions of luxury (Thanks for this, ChatGPT 😊).
The Traditional View
Traditionally, luxury is defined in terms of material wealth, exclusivity, and indulgence. It’s often associated with:
Opulence & Extravagance – rare or expensive things (jewels, designer fashion, gourmet dining, fine wine).
Comfort & Indulgence – having every need anticipated, with little effort required from you (butlers, spa treatments, high-thread-count linens).
Exclusivity & Rarity – things only a select few can access (private jets, rare artworks, bespoke experiences).
Status & Prestige – a way to signal success, power, or social standing.
In dictionaries, it’s typically phrased as “a state of great comfort or elegance, especially when involving great expense.”
That’s the conventional understanding – as something external, visible, costly, and tied to possessions or privilege. Luxury has always been seen as the domain of the wealthy: opulence, excess, and indulgence. A visible display of wealth, comfort, and exclusivity.
It was rare and expensive by design, something only a select few could access.
A Changing Definition of Luxury
But today, that definition feels increasingly out of step with the world we live in. The modern traveller – the modern human – is asking for something deeper.
In an age of constant connection, noise, and hurry, the things that feel truly rare are no longer material possessions but human essentials: time, presence, and peace of mind.
Luxury can now be described as a profound experience characterised by space, silence, and soulfulness. A refined state that values the quality of presence, offering an environment or moment imbued with tranquility, authenticity, and emotional richness.
Spaciousness – not just physically, but also mentally and emotionally – allowing for reflection, clarity, and a deepened connection to oneself and surroundings.
Silence, in this context, is not mere absence of noise but a meaningful stillness that fosters peace, mindfulness, and rejuvenation.
Soulfulness refers to an honest, heartfelt essence that imparts depth and meaningfulness to the experience, inviting a sense of fulfillment and well-being beyond material possessions. This perspective on luxury turns attention to simplicity, mindfulness, and the intangible wealth of the human spirit.
Luxury today is not about more, but about enough.
It’s about time – the freedom to slow down, to rest, to step outside the relentless demands of everyday life.
It’s about wellbeing – health, energy, clarity, and balance.
Luxury has become less about display, and more about feeling.
It is also about authenticity and meaning: experiences that are honest, heartfelt, and real rather than staged or polished to perfection.
Connection has become a luxury too – connection to loved ones, to nature, to community, and most of all, to oneself.
Increasingly, so has care: choosing sustainably, living responsibly, and recognising that how we move through the world matters.
And perhaps the most surprising of all, luxury has come to mean simplicity. Stripping away the excess, cutting through the clutter, finding beauty in the essential. Less, but better. Slower, but richer.
This is the new luxury: not measured in possessions, but in presence. Not in status, but in soul. Not in what can be bought, but in what can be felt.
The New Luxury at Mosetlha
At Mosetlha Bush Camp, this is the definition of luxury we choose to l live by.
Here, in the heart of Madikwe, luxury is space – the endless horizon and the space you discover within yourself.
It is silence – not emptiness, but the deep, alive stillness of the bush.
And it is soulfulness – an honesty and authenticity that comes from stripping life back to its essence and finding connection, meaning, and presence in the simplest of things.
If you’re ready to discover a different kind of luxury – one that lingers long after you leave – we’d love to welcome you to Mosetlha.
