Behind the Scenes: An Off-Grid Safari in Big Five territory - Madikwe Game Reserve
by Kelly Rabie - 10 March 2026
Imagine arriving deep in the wilderness of Madikwe Game Reserve, far from the distractions and demands of everyday life. No reception desks, no commercial kitchens, no daily delivery trucks, and no light pollution - just a small, intimate bush camp under the open sky, designed to immerse you in nature. This is Mosetlha, and it's what makes your stay so special.
Operating a little differently from conventional lodges, Mosetlha is managed as a traditional bush camp - with raised wooden cabins and super comfy beds.
The camp is genuinely remote
and completely off grid. Because of this, our fridges and freezers are small and run on gas - which means we cannot always be fully stocked in the same way as a large hotel or modern lodge.
Rather than seeing this as a limitation, we view it as part of our sustainability ethos: planning carefully and avoiding unnecessary waste.
What this does mean, however, is that a fair amount of preparation happens before each arrival - from catering and supplies, to logistics and coordination with the camp team.
Why payment and guest details are required prior to arrival
Our bookings and administration are handled from our Johannesburg office, about four hours away from the reserve.
Menus are planned per guest, supplies are transported in advance, and vehicles and cabins are prepared to ensure everything is ready for your stay.
To help ensure a dedicated and personalised arrival for you, we ask for the following information upon booking:
- All guest names
- Any food allergies or dietary requirements
- Estimated arrival time
- The route you plan to take
- Whether you will be driving yourselves or using a road transfer
Having this information helps us share arrival logistics with the on-site team ahead of time, and we can prepare your personal reservation document with your unique reservation number (which must be presented upon arrival at the reserve gate).
This allows the team in camp to focus on what they do best - delivering an exceptional bush experience - rather than administrative tasks in a remote environment with limited connectivity.
It is all part of delivering the experience we believe in - thrills over frills, and a safari that feels authentic and intentional, rather than automated.
Why we need your dietary requirements
Meals at Mosetlha are prepared specifically for the guests staying in camp at the time.
With limited refrigeration and freezer capacity, we plan menus in advance and source the exact ingredients needed for each stay.
These are then supplied in the days leading up to your arrival.
Knowing about allergies or dietary preferences ahead of your stay allows our team to cater thoughtfully and ensure everyone is well looked after around the dining table.
This approach also helps minimise food waste - particularly important in our environment.
Why we need to know your arrival time, route and transport details
Knowing your expected arrival time helps our on-site team manage arrivals smoothly. While unforeseen delays can happen, having an estimated time gives us a clear idea of the day’s logistics and ensures that nobody is left waiting unnecessarily - whether guests or our staff.
It’s important to note that our game drives run at fixed times, so we do not adjust them around arrivals. Timings are always communicated in advance to help with your travel plans.
Guests driving themselves to the reserve
For those driving themselves, our team coordinates pick-ups at our designated meeting point, ensuring a smooth transition to the camp.
This is located at the North West Parks Board Administration building (locally known as Vleischfontein). It isn’t a central parking area for all lodges, but serves as a practical spot for Mosetlha guests, as there is no parking inside the camp.
From the reserve gate, it usually takes around 20 minutes to reach this meeting point (and only 10 minutes from the camp), allowing our team to monitor gate radio communications and collect guests promptly.
There are two main access routes to the reserve:
- Abjaterskop Gate - on the western side via Zeerust, when travelling towards Gaborone and the Botswana border.
- Molatedi Gate - on the eastern side, travelling alongside the Pilanesberg.
We provide comprehensive directions for both routes, and knowing your chosen route allows us to alert you to potential hazards or delays on the day.
Guests arriving by road transfer
For guests using a road transfer, providing the company and arrival details allows us to determine whether they have been to us before and are familiar with the roads within the reserve.
We can then decide if drop-off can be directly inside the camp or at the meeting point.
We’re happy to share a list of reliable transfer companies frequently used by our guests.
Can you take last-minute bookings?
We love accommodating adventurous last-minute plans whenever possible.
For the above reasons, though, we kindly ask that bookings be made with sufficient notice. Last-minute enquiries or delayed responses can make it challenging for us to prepare the camp and coordinate logistics, which may affect your experience.
Prompt communication and payment help ensure that everything is ready for a seamless, memorable stay.
If you are considering a last-minute stay, simply get in touch via email. If we can make it work, we’ll gladly do our best to welcome you.
A different kind of safari experience
Instead of aiming for excess, we focus on something that is increasingly rare - a genuine bush camp experience, where the emphasis is on wildlife, guiding, and shared moments rather than modern distractions.
That is what we mean when we say “thrills over frills.” And sometimes, it means planning things a little differently - so that when you arrive, you can relax and immerse yourself fully in the bush, knowing everything has been thoughtfully prepared for you.
