Would You Walk in Big 5 Country? The Magic of Bush Walks at Mosetlha

There’s something undeniably humbling about being on foot in the African bush. No hum of an engine. No metal frame between you and the wild. Just the rustle of dry grass, the pulse of your footsteps, and the raw, exhilarating knowledge that you are in their world now - the world of lions, elephant, rhino, and the many other wild wonders of Madikwe.

We are thrilled to announce that Mosetlha is now offering Madikwe walking safaris and guided bush walks, led by our very own qualified Trails Guide, Justice!

Why Walk?

A walking safari in South Africa offers a completely different perspective from a vehicle-based game drive. It’s an immersive, sensory experience that invites you to slow down and notice the bush in its finest details.

On foot, you begin to see the interconnectedness of everything. Justice will guide you through interpreting signs left by animals, identifying plant species, and understanding the delicate balance of this incredible ecosystem. It’s not about how close you get to big game (although that may happen too!) - it’s about seeing, hearing, and feeling the bush in its most authentic form.

What Our Guests Are Saying

Recent guest Oliver Davis shared this after their walk:

Our bush walk with Justice was one of the best experiences of our lives. Walking allows a completely different perspective and appreciation for the animals and their environment. Justice is brilliant, you can tell how passionate he is about the experience, we felt completely safe even in the environment of big game. We'll be back for more in future!”

How It Works

  • Walks are optional (we still run two game drives a day for those who don't want to walk).
  • The walk will take place in the morning, replacing your morning game drive.
  • Justice can guide up to 6 guests solo.
  • For groups of 7-8 guests, we’ll bring in a qualified back-up guide to meet the required safety standards.
  • If only some guests from Justice’s vehicle want to walk (e.g. 1-2 people), we may need to arrange for another guide to conduct the game drive for the rest of his guests.

If we can accommodate your walk without needing to bring in an extra guide, the walk will be included in your stay at no extra cost.
If additional logistics are needed (e.g., hiring a backup walking guide or second driver), a R600 fee applies - just enough to cover the extra staffing cost.... Ensuring everyone gets the experience they want - whether on foot or on wheels.

For details on what's included in your stay, check out our Rates & Info page.

    Important Safety Info

Walking safaris in Madikwe are governed by safety protocols outlined in the Madikwe Mandate

    • No guests under the age of 16 may participate in walking safaris.
    • Guests over 60 are required to provide a doctor’s letter confirming they are fit and healthy enough to walk.

We understand that age doesn’t define fitness, but to remain compliant with park regulations, we ask guests to bring a signed medical clearance if applicable.

    How to Book Your Walk

To help us coordinate logistics (especially if an additional guide is needed), we kindly ask that you let us know at the time of booking if you'd like to include a walking safari in your Mosetlha stay.

This gives us time to coordinate schedules and, if needed, bring in another guide to ensure all guests - those who walk and those who prefer the vehicle - can fully enjoy the unique and unforgettable Mosetlha experience.
